Can you snorkel at Aulani? As a travel agent, I get asked this question all the time, and the answer might surprise you! Many families head to Hawaii for the sun, sand, and exciting outdoor adventures—snorkeling being one of the most popular. But at Aulani’s Rainbow Reef, you’ll find a unique snorkeling experience that is perfect for all ages. Keep reading to discover why this isn’t your typical snorkel spot and if it should be on your family’s must-do list!
When we first arrived at Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa, I wanted to check out all the amenities. I had heard about Aulani’s Rainbow Reef but wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
If you’re unfamiliar, Aulani’s Rainbow Reef is a man-made saltwater lagoon nestled among the pools and filled with vibrant tropical fish. And yes, you can snorkel at Aulani in Rainbow Reef.
It’s one of those signature Disney details that sets their resorts apart. You might be wondering, “Snorkeling in a man-made lagoon? Is it really worth it?” The answer is- it can be!
Disney always goes above and beyond to ensure there’s something for everyone, especially for families with kids. If you’re traveling with little ones or if the thought of snorkeling in the open ocean feels intimidating, Aulani’s Rainbow Reef is the perfect alternative.
Let me take you through all the fun features of Rainbow Reef, so you can decide if this unique snorkeling adventure should be on your family’s must-do list at Aulani.
Getting Ready to Dive In
Aulani’s Rainbow Reef is conveniently located right by the pool area, making it easy to slip into a snorkeling adventure without going far. It’s perfect for families, especially if you’re not sure how your kids will handle snorkeling in the ocean. Instead of renting a car and driving to the beach, only to find out that your child isn’t a fan, Rainbow Reef allows you to try snorkeling without leaving the comfort of the resort.
All the snorkel gear you’ll need—life vest, mask, and snorkel—is provided, making it incredibly easy for first timers. Aulani’s Rainbow Reef provides a safe environment for children, with lifeguards on duty and no waves or currents like in the open ocean. It’s an excellent way for kids to dip their toes into snorkeling without the overwhelming feeling of the deep sea.
One quick tip: the water at Rainbow Reef is noticeably cooler than the pools. The lagoon is kept at around 77 degrees Fahrenheit to mimic the natural environment for the fish. The pools on the other hand are around 82-86 degrees. On our first visit, when our daughter was 5, we decided to skip the experience after talking with other guests. Once they mentioned the cooler water, she decided it wasn’t for her. So, I definitely recommend following your child’s lead and considering their comfort with swimming and snorkeling before jumping in!
Up Close with Hawaii’s Marine Life
The coolest part of Aulani’s Rainbow Reef is how up close and personal you can get with the fish. It’s like swimming in a giant aquarium! Kids will absolutely love seeing all the colorful fish darting around them. And for a bit of Disney magic, hidden Mickeys are scattered throughout the reef. It’s those little details that make Aulani’s Rainbow Reef so unique. If you’re curious about the fish you’ll encounter, I recommend checking out this Disney blog post, Aulani Resort’s Rainbow Reef Fish Help Tell Their Own Sustainability Story.
Options for Everyone at Rainbow Reef
While many families enjoy the basic snorkeling experience, Aulani’s Rainbow Reef offers some neat ways to explore even further. One of my favorites is the Supplied-Air Snorkeling (SAS) experience. This guided underwater tour, led by one of Aulani’s aquarists, lets you wear a regulator and float comfortably as you learn more about the reef’s marine life. It’s a perfect option for kids or adults who want extra guidance or are interested in hearing fascinating facts from an expert. Disney recommends it for kids ages 8 and up, and it’s a fun one-on-one experience.
If your kids are really into marine life, they can also participate in the “Fish Are Friends” program, where they get to help feed the fish in the lagoon. Our daughter absolutely loved this! She still talks about how exciting it was to actually feed the fish. And for those who may not want to take part, there’s a great viewing window where you can watch the fish being fed. It’s perfect for younger kids who may not want to do the feeding but still want to be part of the action.
For those ready to take their snorkeling adventure to the next level, Aulani’s Rainbow Reef offers the Underwater Explorers program—a fantastic experience for guests who want to try scuba diving without needing a certification. This 2-hour lesson, available for guests 10 years and older, is led by professional dive instructors who will teach you the basics of scuba diving and essential safety procedures. After mastering the skills, you can free swim alongside schools of colorful fish in the beautiful Rainbow Reef. The program includes all necessary gear—mask, fins, and wetsuits—and even comes with a special gift, a Rainbow Reef Fish ID card, and a video of your underwater adventure! It’s a perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with marine life while also trying out scuba diving in a safe and controlled environment. Underwater Explorers is offered on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:45 PM to 4:45 PM, and it’s a great option for anyone looking to add a unique experience to their Aulani vacation.
Aulani’s Rainbow Reef Viewing Windows
One of my favorite parts of Aulani’s Rainbow Reef are the viewing windows. If snorkeling isn’t your thing, or if you’re just passing by, you can still enjoy the underwater world through these windows. We loved stopping by and watching the fish swim by as people snorkeled. There’s even a chart with pictures of the various fish in the reef, along with their Hawaiian names. My daughter had so much fun trying to match the fish she saw with the ones on the chart—and, of course, trying to pronounce their Hawaiian names (which was a challenge, but a fun one!).

Are there other good places for kids to snorkel outside of the Resort on Oahu?
If you’re considering snorkeling in open water beyond Aulani, Shark’s Cove on the North Shore is a fantastic option. Despite its somewhat intimidating name, Shark’s Cove is renowned for its family-friendly snorkeling conditions. Located between Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay, this spot benefits from relatively calm waters, making it an excellent choice for families. You’ll encounter stunning marine life in this natural setting, offering a different experience compared to the man-made environment of Rainbow Reef. However, for a more controlled and accessible snorkeling adventure, especially for younger children, Rainbow Reef at Aulani remains a perfect choice.
